Our cruise took us to the city of Naples, Italy on June 3rd (our 40th anniversary)! Brent and I decided to take the train to Pompeii-30 minutes (by train) south of Naples. We downloaded Rick Steves narration on our I-Pods as a guide. It was a wonderful day as we wandered around the ruins of a city (population-around 20,000) buried by ash and dirt over the course of two days from the eruption of a volcano named Vesuvius. Many people escaped but many did not. Some people boarded themselves up in their homes, thinking that they would be protected from the ash and poisonous gases. Amazingly, when the city was "un-earthed" around the 1700's, the structures revealed a very sophisticated society with many modern conveniences.
