Antoni Gaudi's influence is all over Barcelona. Sagrada Familia is one of the most famous and most unconventional churches in Europe. Sagrada Familia means "holy family" in Catalan (the language spoken in Barcelona). For one thing, this building, started in 1883 is not yet completed. Gaudi became so obsessed with the work that he lived on site for the last 16 years of his life and lived like a recluse. The work is still going on and is expected to be finished in 2030.
There is so much symbolism-there is a Passion Facade on the south side and a Nativity Facade on the north-both very different styles. Inside are columns representing trees while skylights let in natural light. There are stained glass windows that have a lot of significance. Gaudi was very particular about having "just the right amount of light" in his buildings.
After touring the church, we all went to Pizza Hut Restaurant for a delicious lunch. Our lunches were usually around 2 or 3 pm. That's the way things are in Spain!
