After the age of 50, you are advised to have this test to screen for colon cancer. It examines the lower tract-called the sigmoid colon. My doctor ordered me to get one when I saw her in December. I finally called last week, thinking that it would take awhile to get in and I could put it off a little longer. Surprise-they got me in within a week:) The test itself if not that bad (you can look it up online to find out how it is done.)
The preparation ahead of time is not that fun!
The day before, you can have your last meal before 2pm. After that, it's only clear liquids-meaning ones you can see through-broth, apple juice, etc.
At 6pm, you drink this stuff called Phopho-Soda which is mixed in a glass of water. It is the grossest tasting stuff ever! My sister in law had to take it for a colonoscopy and she warned me that it works in 15 minutes. For me, it was 2 hours but still, it works to cleanse your intestinal system really well!
The next day, you have the fun job of using 2 enemas 2 hours before your appointment. By the time you get to the appointment, you are ready for anything.
The procedure was quick, a little uncomfortable but very interesting. I was able to watch the scope "look" inside my colon on the monitor. The doctor said
"all was well" and "see you in 5 years". I don't think I'll stress too much next time.
I have to admit, this experience gave me a whole new appreciation for those who do have colon cancer. Boy, the test is sure a lot easier than what I suspect they have to go through. We all need to take care of ourselves by doing the routine checks. Please, don't put them off-like I did...
